I made this painting of the Dutch Royal couple, Willem and Maxima, for the Dutch Club of Chicago Queensday Party. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicated the throne yesterday, making Prince of Orange, Willem Alexander the new King of The Netherlands. Typical Dutch symbols of the flag, the Kingdom’s Coat of Arms, tulips, wooden shoes, windmill, a cow, cheese and Hans Brinker (whom most Americans know for putting his finger in the dyke) are depicted. Maxima’s Argentinean background is referenced in light blue with white of her dress.
